Washington Akita Group, Inc. (WAG) is a small group of concerned Akita people dedicated to the rescue and placement of orphaned Akitas in Eastern and Central Washington State (other areas in the Pacific Northwest as foster or kennel space allows). Our primary mission is to find good homes for abandoned Akitas, most coming from local animal shelters after being found as strays or given up to shelters by their owners. We DO NOT take dogs directly from an owner except under extraordinary conditions. We help transition the dogs into their new homes by providing proper nutrition, veterinary care, grooming, socialization and love before placement. We offer support for Akita owners and education for our communities about the Akita as a breed and the need for responsible dog ownership. WAG is now an IRS approved 501(c)(3) public charity. Donations are tax deductible.
If you are interested in adopting an Akita from WAG, please fill out an Adoption Application and send it in! Once an application is submitted, it may take 2-3 weeks to be processed and a reply sent. WAG is made up of volunteers who help in their free time. We realize you are anxious to hear from us and we will respond as quickly as possible. To be considered for any WAG Akita, the following must be completed: Application submitted, home visit completed and reference checks completed. Please understand that we will make a decision that is in the best interest of the dog. Thank you for your patience. ANNOUNCEMENTS We are always in need of Akita-experienced foster homes. Please contact WAG if you are interested. Foster home application and home check required. ********************* Effective October 2009: No adoptions out of the country. ************* See our Adoption Page for owner placements.
Orphan Spotlight
Finn
Finn is a typical adolescent Akita male. He was turned in by his owner because of his typical Akita traits. They did not socialize him properly or provide the leadership needed by this breed. He did live with a female Akita and they were great friends. Finn is about 2 years old and needs training, socializing, work on manners and living inside a house. He needs to go to an Akita experienced family who will know how to work with a young male. He does guard his food and cannot live with cats. He will need a securely fenced yard and a set routine. Finn is a work in progress and is not ready to go to his forever home yet. We will keep you posted. Update: 5/16/10 Finn is a bouncing boy full of energy and fun. And he is completely housebroken. He walks well on leash and does like to walk in the woods and play in the water. Finn needs an Akita experienced home - no children or cats. He needs a steady home life with no big changes on the horizon. If you understand Akitas, dominant dogs and those who resource guard, you might be the right home for this beautiful boy. Kodiak
Because of unforeseen personal circumstances, Kodiak has come back to WAG. This fun-loving, sweet young boy needs a new forever home - one that will last. He is very healthy, about 2 1/2 years old, neutered, up to date on shots. He is also crate and house trained. Kodiak needs an Akita experienced family - no young children, cats or small dogs. He has been living with a female Akita. Kodiak must be a house dog with a securely fenced yard for outside time. He is a wonderful companion who will warm your heart with his kisses. Could you be the home and family he deserves? URGENT NEED! WAG is in desperate need of volunteers and foster homes, especially in Eastern Washington and Idaho. We need Akita knowledgeable people to evaluate, transport and foster Akitas. WE NEED YOU! See our WARN Page for Other Shelter Placement Spindle-24503 added 7/5/10 Kitsap Humane Society-Silverdale WA
Spindle is a black female Akita mix who would love a new family to love and care for her. She was found wandering on Hwy 3 near Bremerton and has been at the shelter since 6/6/10. Spindle forgot to bring her diary so you will have to figure out a few things together. She is calm, laid back and friendly. She needs a family who will walk her, provide a comfy bed, and cozy place to call home. She has been spayed and is ready for her forever home. She is in Kennel 56 at the Kitsap Humane Society; open 7 days a week. Adoption hours are 12:00PM to 5:00PM. 360-692-6977 Kita-#21354, Kennel 12 Kitsap Humane Society-Silverdale WA added 5/16/10

Consider fostering an Akita. We are always in need of foster homes. So many Akitas end up in shelters and we cannot help them all. If you are "Akita smart" and have room in your home and your heart, you might be the perfect foster parent for an orphaned Akita. Contact us Washington Akita Group
